First Therapy Experience

First Time In Therapy? Unsure Of What To Expect? No Worries! Let’s Walk Through Some Expectations For Therapy:

First, therapy is not advice giving nor is it a one-way exchange. Instead therapy is an opportunity to have an objective dialogue about your concerns with someone who can hear, emphasize, and understand you. Often times, this will resemble a casual conversation so feel comfortable to be yourself. Using specialized training, your therapist will use tools and techniques proven to assist you in processing and overcoming issues that hinder progress.

Your first appointment is an intake session. During this initial session, the therapist will cover limits to confidentiality, informed consent, and background information (i.e. family, medical, social background, etc.) that will assist with understanding you as an individual. Your presenting concerns will also be discussed. After you and the therapist agree to begin therapy, subsequent sessions will be scheduled and the therapeutic process will start!

Know that at times there may be homework assigned to aid in building awareness and skills. Each technique is different and depends upon your presenting concern(s). It is also important to know that with few limitations, therapy is confidential! So expect to dig deep and have insightful conversations! One of the most rewarding experiences is being able to witness your own growth journey. Let’s take that journey together and venture on New Mornings and New Beginnings!
